Mini Task: Schönhausen

The statue depicts Carl von Ossietzky, who died in 4 May 1938 from tuberculosis and the after-effects of the concentration camps. Von Ossietzky was a pacifist who tried to warn people of the atrocities being committed by the Nazis. He was convicted of high treason and espionage for leaking details regarding the rebuilding of the Luftwaffe, a violation of the Treaty of Versailles.

Do you think this memorial is enough to represent what this man did? I think that there should have been something more than just his name on the monument.

I agree with Amanda on the front that I would have liked to see something more to this monument, a plaque as well possibly. Although many of the Jewish memorials are quite understated so do you think the simplicity was by design?

I think the monument is designed to be understated to represent his lonely struggle against war. The hunched posture and grim visage reflects his suffering, emotionally and physically. It's interesting to note that in 1992 there was a court appeal for Von Ossietzky's conviction of espionage and the ruling was upheld according to 1931 law.

I can't find anything to say that he was jewish or not.

What about the location this memorial is located? I know most people focus on the memorial itself, but does the area around it appear to make it more important, or is it just some statue sitting around?

This monument is appropriate for the reasons Bobby stated. The question of whether it is enough or not, is an interesting one.
I for one would say that we could build more and bigger monuments but I think quality over quantity is way to go.
The scale is almost never enough and often far too much when it comes to monuments.
We can act on his philosophies of non-violence, that is what will really would have made Ossietsky content.
